Below are projects that are in need of funding. Your contributions are appreciated and needed. Donations are tax-deductible as provided by law.
Bodie Cemetery Project
This project is sponsored by California State Parks with instructors coming form the University of Oregon and the National Parks Service. A training class is scheduled to begin in October of 2008. Class dates include 10/7/08 through 10/9/08. State Park personnel and local agency employees are the target attendees. Costs for the training are covered by California State Parks. There are other expenses not covered under current funding.
There is an immediate need to raise $500 to fund Forensic Dogs that will assist with locating unmarked gravesites within a few acres of the boundaries of the Bodie Cemetery. There are also sites located outside the fence line that need to be identified. The funds raised would cover expenses for two dogs and two handlers.
There is a further need of $2,500 for a complete survey to locate sites beginning in the spring or early summer of 2009. This survey would require additional dogs to survey the entire 40 acres of the Bodie Cemetery site. These funds will cover the expenses for four dogs and four handlers.
Bodie Cemetery Stabilization Project
$75,000 is needed for spring / summer 2009 to complete stabilization of the Bodie Cemetery once the training and surveys have been completed. Donation will cover a State Park Restoration Specialist, State Park and Recreation Specialist, State Park Laborer, and the purchase of materials to begin the task of stabilizing the cemetery according the requirements of "arrested decay."
Bodie Railway Station / Railroad Superintendent Residence
$3,200 is needed to hire a California Department of Corrections crew to come into Bodie and clean out this amazing two story structure. California State Parks acquired this building and property in 1997. Over the years the effects of weather and vandalism have taken their toll. State Park interpreters lead tours on this property and into the building. The funds will cover the costs of the crew for 20 days.
It is hoped that the building will eventually be stabilized and all windows rebuilt and replaced. The foundation is in need of repair, ceilings need to be nailed and repaired, and in some places new flooring. The main entry room floor where the tour goes is oak. Some of this was been removed by vandals and was burned. This is yet another project - A very big project, in the range of $125,000.
On-going Maintenance of state fence around Bodie
$2,000 to hire a California Department of Corrections crew to come into Bodie and make necessary repairs to the fence surrounding Bodie State Historic Park. One of these crews initially installed this fence. State Park funding has been inadequate for it's maintenance. The fence both designates the park boundary and prevents damage by cattle. Funding would hire a crew for 10 days @ $160/day. Plus the cost of materials and tools.
Bodie Map Conservation
In the summer of 2007 a map, dated 1906, was given to Bodie State Historic Park. It was a gift from the Scanivino family. The map shows the under ground mine working of the Bodie Mining District. The plan is to have the map conserved, framed and displayed in the video theater at Bodie. During the conservation, a copy of the map would also be made. The cost of this project will be approximately $3,500 which includes the work done and hand-delivery of the map to the Conservator.
