Price: $145 per person / $130 for Bodie Foundation members

Description:
The Heritage Tour will take you back in time where you will discover the fascinating history that connects the Bodie Hills, Mono Basin, Bridgeport and the Aurora region. The past will come alive as you hear stories of the discoverers, the prospectors, and the families who settled here. We will travel historic wagon routes as we visit Dogtown, Monoville, Bodie, and Aurora. This unique journey will focus on the people, the sites and the stories that make this area extraordinary.

Itinerary:

Saturday, June 26, 8:00 am: We will meet at Virginia Creek Settlement. Our first destination is Dogtown located within a mile of the Settlement. Dogtown is noted as the first site of gold discovery on the Eastern Sierra in 1857. Next stop is Monoville, located in the hills north of Mono Lake. We will travel the Bodie/Lundy Wagon Road, now known as Cottonwood Canyon, stopping at the Scanavino Goat Ranch to learn about this important place in history. We will then head up to Bodie where we will spend most of the day. You will receive a privileged tour of the town, stamp mill and cemetery. We will arrive back at Virginia Creek Settlement by 4:00 pm.

Sunday, June 27, 8:30 am: We will meet in the parking lot at Bodie. Our adventure to Aurora begins on the historic stage route that leads down Del Monte Canyon; not much has changed since the freight wagons and stages traveled this way. At Aurora we will see what remains of this 1860's silver mining town-brick foundations, Samuel Clemens' former home, and a fascinating cemetery. When it is time to head back to modern civilization, we will continue on the historic stage route that will lead us to Hwy 182. Our day will conclude at the Settlement at 5:00 pm.
